It's that time of the week again. I empty my cache, and you get links.
- Flash Flash Revolution: Just like its dance video game counterpart, but in the place of a workout, you get carpel-tunnel.
- Wired News: "Apple's iTunes Music Store appears to be a smash hit -- opening day downloads equaled the number of songs legally downloaded over a six-month period last year."
- Critical Mass: "Women outnumber men by a four to three ratio on American campuses." Summary, links, and discussion; Critical Mass is the best thing I've found for following important news in higher education.
- Philadelphia Inquirer: "You become desensitized," Adams said. "It's just porn." An article about verifiers -- the people who check out porn sites all day for pay.
- Audioscrobbler Browser: Explore the links between musicians. It's like BuddyZoo for your favorite artists. Plugins allow listeners to contribute to the project by sending their playlists.
Jeffrey Veen documented his encounters with corporate jargon recently and turned up a couple of good phrases.
Screw those damn Vagina monologues. Behold......Puppetry of the Penis.
In New York City, a bill threatens the right for kids to play with toy guns. I guess a few kids were apparently mistaken for possessing real guns and ended up shot or something. But thank God that those Libertarians are looking out for us with their new program.
"We're doing this for the children. If we can bring a little joy into the lives of New York's youth -- while such joy is still legal -- then Guns for Tots will be a success."
The only two shows I really miss watching are The Daily Show and The Simpsons. From the Daily Show, a clip featuring Jon Stewart interviewing Governor GWBush and President GWBush. Juxtaposition is a beautiful thing.
From Rosecrans's review and tribute to Amanda Hesser and her book:
"The pleasures of eating and drinking well, with friends or alone, are as much about being brave enough to seek them out, as being wise enough to enjoy them."
Oh-hell-yes.
- This kid breaks it down. Sure, he's chubby, but that's not what makes it funny. It's funny because he goes off, jedi-style, and the action is intense. There is also a remix available. [ via waxy.org ]
- Baby got back, karaoke style, on the television, by a white dude selling electronics. Go Nic.
In the mail today, from Visa:
The one-time only activation process is very simple and can be completed in just a few minutes. There are two ways to accomplish activation:
- online at https://secure2.arcot.com/vpas/usaa/i18n/en_US/index.html (available May 2, 2003)
- or at your next transaction with a participating online store.
What is simple, exactly, about that URL? I bet 50% of the people that try to type it into their browsers forget the 's' in 'https' nevermind the rest of the alphabet soup. Don't forget that it's April still and I'm getting directed to a URL that's not up until May 2nd. Who let this letter go out to customers?
