Labor Day Party at Axis this Sunday

This is always a good party. Aaron and Josh know how to make it work, and Axis Radius is a great place to launch the fireworks. Hope to see you out. Check out clubparties.com for details and pictures of past events.

Priorities

Just one more reason why I enjoy San Francisco: highest per capita expenditure on booze and books. Lovely.

always pay in cash...

and check over your shoulder as discreetly as possible. i love all the hype about gmail - don't get me wrong, i'm trying to get an account, and i think that it sounds brilliant - but i found this site rather interesting, as it was the third search hit found...i'd better get rid of all my questionable internet practices (such as ukazu and fuelfire) before i get gmail, or else i'll end up blindfolded, cold, and whimpering in some bunker somewhere...

Anybody use Skype?

I've been curious about Skype. It's supposed to be pretty rad, and it gets good press for being a phone revolution, but I'm curious if anybody I know is already using it.

W a Fraud

Kerry isn't the only one with boat mates calling out bullshit: Pleasure Boat Captains for Truth. It's time W stopped talking up his wild days and bellied up for being a lightweight.

What would the world be without good satire? I shudder at the thought.

Other good times with W. You know, he probably would have been a lot of fun to party with in the 70s and 80s.

You know what, I'm calling it right now: Cheever for President in 2032.

A "Catastrophic" Presidency

In an interview with Time magazine, President Bush called the war in Iraq a “catastrophic success.” Surely the President did not misspeak—again. This was no off-the-cuff speech, the ones normally riddled with Bushisms that irk the educated and European, delight budding neologists, but leave most of us confused or, at best, with a new type of drinking game during the State of the Union. No, this was an interview where Karl Rove certainly crafted, in advance, every word the President would utter.

So, “catastrophic success” must really mean something, must really reflect the White House’s take on the war. I’m at a loss and so are the pundits. Anyone want to give it a shot? Some in the Administration have attempted a clarification. Our military was incredibly strong and won the war too early. One question: what war is ever too short? Permit me another: why doesn’t the Commander-in-Chief know how strong our military is? I seem to remember our military being in the Persian Gulf only ten years ago fighting the same dude. Perhaps Bush’s conscience was trying to say, “Look, we had no post-war game plan.” Wow. Honesty in what one correspondent called a “semantical permutation.”

First Lady Laura Bush was also featured in the magazine, speaking about issues I feel all ex-librarians are experts on: stem cells and gay marriage. She dismisses stem cell’s promise by referring to her parent’s incurable Alzheimer’s. Too bad the cutting edge stem cell research focuses more on Parkinson’s. Can’t our scientists get it straight? Time magazine later asks, “Have you ever had a gay couple stay with you in the White House or in Texas? Her response—“I’m sure we have”—leaves one with the overwhelming feeling that the Bush family does not know that they know homosexual people. The message: if you want to stay at the Ranch, it’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.
