Revisionist Histories of John Paul II and Joseph Stalin

In an article on Slate, the ever insightful Christopher Hitchens draws some uncanny, if not downright spooky, similarities between the late Pope and Stalin. As I alternate between unbridled critic and proudly unrepentant heretic, I was naturally drawn to this piece. I like that someone is unafraid to sharply criticize the Pope and the Church at a time when the media makes it seem like the entire world is Catholic and should revere this guy. I, for one, do not lament his passing and hope the Church views the election of a new Pope as an opportunity to develop policies that (a) do not kill or hurt people (which would be a first in its violent history) and (b) are consistent.

Google Maps Has Cool Satellite Skills

Google added a toggle to its online map functionality that will flip the cartoon colored map we're all used to into a satellite photo of the same area at the same scale. Oh yeah, it's rad. It doesn't zoom in far enough to see who's on the patio at Four Peaks or who's tanning at the SRC pool, but it's pretty cool just the same.

And thanks to Google Maps and Matt Haughey's study of Soil Chemistry, I now have a definitive explanation for the shallow, brightly colored pools at the south end of the bay. Rad.

If you find somethin' cool or just want to point us at your backyard for a collective "whoa!", drop a comment.

Update: Way cool -- somebody has started collecting all the cool crap spotted using Google Maps.
